Perfect TV Height - The Science
After mounting hundreds of TVs, here's the formula for perfect viewing:
The Eye-Level Rule
The center of your TV should be at eye level when seated.
For most people, this means:
- Standard sofa: TV center at 42-45 inches from floor
- Low sofa or bean bags: TV center at 36-40 inches
- Bedroom (viewing from bed): TV center at 40-48 inches
- Kitchen (standing viewing): TV center at 55-60 inches
Common Mistake: Mounting above a fireplace often places the TV too high, causing neck strain. If this is your only option, we use a tilting bracket so the screen angles down toward seating.
Exeter Property Types & Challenges
Victorian/Edwardian Properties (Heavitree, St Leonards, Pennsylvania)
Beautiful solid brick walls - the best for TV mounting:
- Advantage: Extremely strong walls, can hold any TV size
- Consideration: Thick walls mean longer screws/bolts needed
- Challenge: Original lime plaster can crumble - we drill carefully and use appropriate fixings
- Chimney Breasts: Perfect for TV mounting, very solid
Modern Estates (Cranbrook, Monkerton, Pinhoe)
Plasterboard stud walls - require specialist knowledge:
- Method: We locate wall studs (timber frames) and mount directly to them
- If no stud available: Use heavy-duty plasterboard anchors rated for TV weight
- External walls: Usually breeze block - different fixings required
- Safety: Weight limits depend on wall construction (I'll assess before mounting)
Student Accommodation (St David's, Pennsylvania, Hoopern)
Often requires landlord permission:
- Always check tenancy agreement before drilling
- Many landlords prefer TV stands to wall mounting
- If permitted, we'll fill/paint holes at end of tenancy (additional service)
Listed Buildings & Conservation Areas
Exeter city center has many listed buildings:
- Minimal damage approach - smallest possible fixings
- May recommend TV stand instead if preservation is critical
- Surface-mounted cable management (no chasing walls)

Real Exeter Installation Stories
The Wonford Chimney Breast Challenge
Customer in Wonford wanted their 75" TV mounted on an original Victorian chimney breast. The plaster was over 100 years old and the brickwork behind was irregular. Used 12mm rawl bolts directly into brick (avoiding the crumbly mortar), perfectly level despite the uneven surface. That TV isn't going anywhere for another 100 years!
The Cranbrook Home Cinema
New build in Cranbrook - client wanted the full cinema experience. Mounted 65" TV, soundbar, installed floating shelves for Xbox and PlayStation, ran all cables through the cavity wall, and programmed their Harmony remote to control everything. They can now switch from Sky to gaming to Netflix with one button. The wife was particularly happy the cables were invisible!
The Student House Quick Fix
Five students sharing a house in St David's pooled money for a 50" TV. Their landlord gave permission to mount it but wanted minimal damage. Used a swivel mount on the chimney breast so everyone could see from different sofas, basic cable tidying, all done in under an hour. They agreed to call me back to fill the holes when they move out next summer.
Common TV Mounting Mistakes (And How We Avoid Them)
1. Wrong Bracket for Wall Type
The Problem: Using plasterboard fixings on a hollow wall with a 65" TV. Recipe for disaster.
Our Solution: We assess wall type before starting. Use stud finder for timber frames, correct fixings for each material. Weight limits respected.
2. Too High Mounting
The Problem: TV mounted at standing eye-level. Neck pain within 30 minutes of watching.
Our Solution: We measure your seating position and calculate proper height. If you insist on high mounting (above fireplace, etc.), we use tilting brackets.
3. Not Checking for Cables/Pipes
The Problem: Drilling through electrical cables or water pipes hidden in walls.
Our Solution: Cable detector used on every job. We know common routes for cables in different property types. External walls (usually safe) preferred where possible.
4. Inadequate Cable Management
The Problem: Cables hanging loose behind TV, visible to everyone.
Our Solution: Minimum standard is grouped and clipped cables. Premium options available for completely hidden cables.
5. Off-Center Mounting
The Problem: TV slightly off-center on the wall. Drives people crazy once they notice it.
Our Solution: Measure wall width, mark exact center, use spirit level. Precision matters.
Soundbar Installation
Most customers want a soundbar with their TV. We can install:
Wall-Mounted Soundbar (Under TV)
- Mounted directly below TV at perfect distance
- Power and HDMI cables run alongside TV cables
- Optical or HDMI ARC connection
- Price: £35 additional (when done with TV mounting)
Soundbar on TV Stand
- Placed on cabinet below wall-mounted TV
- Cables concealed along with TV cables
- Price: £20 additional (cable management and connection)
Surround Sound Systems
- Rear speakers wall-mounted
- Subwoofer positioned for optimal bass
- All speaker cables concealed where possible
- Price: £120-£180 (full 5.1 system installation)
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my TV fall off the wall?
No. When properly installed with correct fixings for the wall type, your TV is safer on the wall than on a stand (children/pets can't knock it over). I've mounted hundreds of TVs in 18 years - zero have ever fallen. I use fixings rated for 3-4x the TV weight as a safety margin.
Can you mount on plasterboard/stud walls?
Yes. We locate the wooden studs behind the plasterboard and mount directly to them. If no studs are in the right position, we use heavy-duty plasterboard anchors rated for the TV weight. Maximum recommended weight for plasterboard: 30kg (most TVs under 65" are fine).
How long does TV mounting take?
Standard installation: 45-90 minutes. Premium with cable concealment: 90-150 minutes. Full home cinema: 2-4 hours. I work efficiently but never rush - precision matters.
Do I need to provide the wall mount bracket?
Either way works. If you've already bought a bracket, I'll install it (free check to ensure it's appropriate for your TV/wall). If not, I can supply and fit a professional bracket (cost included in quote). I use Vogel's and Sanus - both excellent brands.
What about above a fireplace?
Possible but not ideal. The TV will be higher than optimal viewing height (causes neck strain). If this is your only option, I recommend a tilting bracket so the screen angles down. Also need to check heat from fireplace won't damage TV - gas fires usually fine, wood burners need minimum 12" clearance.
Can cables be completely hidden?
Yes, with premium installation. On cavity walls (most modern properties), cables can run inside the wall. On solid walls, we use paintable surface trunking. For the absolute cleanest look, a new power socket can be installed directly behind the TV (electrical work arranged separately or with certified electrician).
Will you damage my wall?
Minimal impact. We drill precise holes for the fixings (4-6 holes typically). If you later remove the TV, holes can be filled with filler and touched up with paint. For rentals, most landlords are fine with TV mounting - but check your tenancy agreement first.
Can you mount curved/OLED TVs?
Absolutely. Curved TVs mount the same as flat ones. OLED TVs are actually easier - they're lighter than equivalent LED/LCD TVs. The mounting process is identical, just with appropriately rated brackets.
